Commander Harris reported to HS-6 on 24 August 1956 and assumed command of the squadron on 7 May 1957 when he relieved Acting Commanding Officer Lcdr Douglas O. McKay. Commander Harris enlisted in the Navy in May 1941 as a Second Class Seaman and began his flight training at Jacksonville, FL. In June 1942 Commander Harris completed flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator and commissioned as an Ensign. His prior duty assignments included: Naval Air Station, Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone; Fleet Air Wing Three, Carrier Aircraft Service Unit 22; Patrol Squadron Forty-Eight; General Line Officer School, Monterey, CA; and Naval Air Facility Weeksville, Elizabeth City, NJ.
